Made for the exhibition their room washed with hot light, a group show in a 110 year-old apartment, organised slowly over a period of several years by my friend Eeva-Maija Pulkkinen and me, featuring the works of 21 artists and writers:
Arina Baranova, CAConrad, Cameron Awkward-Rich, Eetu Sihvonen, Eeva-Maija Pulkkinen, Fathia Mohidin, Frank Brümmel, Iisa Lepistö, Inari Virmakoski, Inga Meldere, Iona Roisin, Isto Rahkila, Jenny Brady, Mikko Kuorinki, Minjee Hwang Kim, Niko Tiinanen, Nina Danino, Raisa Marja Suksi, Sara Blosseville, Xan Phillips & Yoojin Lee.
"For curators Pulkkinen and Roisin there is a need for group shows in Finland, especially artist-initiated ones. A DIY show in a non-institutional space will always feel different to a museum show, for the viewers and especially for the participating artists, where there’s more potential for them to be fruitful spaces of exchange, support and discussion. What does showing in another kind of location make space for? What is freed up? Here, the domesticity, the years, and the ghosts make conversation with the works, encouraging intimacy, new readings, and inviting guests to spend a little longer with the works.
The exhibition aims to lend space to the web-like process of art making, which involves searching, gathering, noting and sharing, much like the curation itself. This project provided a space for Pulkkinen and Roisin to get excited, to seek out artists that inspired them, and to share these findings, making the collaborative aspect one of the most essential elements."
