Sketch for a Postcard in 2019 / moving image / 06:13 / 2023

In this piece the artist writes a postcard from St. Petersburg to their late-grandmother, seeking to share an impression of a place and so to connect. The postcard is self-conscious, admitting how fraught it can be to relate anything about a place you don’t know. This is complicated further when speaking to a person with a different frame of reference to you, about a city such as St. Petersburg, which many would regard with specific preconceived notions. Roisin tries to quietly open this process up, marking the postcard with work worries, the presence of history, attempts to find common ground amongst generational (and cultural) differences, and the things we bring with us to the places we go.
